Are New Year's resolutions even worth making?

Psychologically, the start of a new year creates revisions in our mind set.  We look back on the previous year and reminisce on what could have been, what worked well and what we could have done better.

There is something wonderfully vitalizing about making resolutions, something refreshing about the clean slate ahead that promotes an invigorating feeling of optimism. A new year marks restoration and new beginnings.  A new year marks amazing opportunity.

Some may argue that resolutions don’t see it pass January 31, be this as it may, setting goals and being open to change, helps trigger new behaviors, helps guides your focus and helps you sustain momentum in life.

Knowing what you need to work on also help align your focus and promote a sense of self-mastery. You can’t manage what you can’t measure, and you can’t improve something if you are unclear of exactly what needs improvement.

Why setting goals are important:·

  •   They help us see that we need change in certain areas

  • They help us challenge ourselves

  • They help us realize that we always have a choice

  • They help us get rid of bad habits and enable healthier alternatives

  • They help us visualize the life we want

Nelson Mandela once said that one of the things he learned was that until he changed himself, he could not change others.  That is one of the most important lessons of life: taking ownership and responsibility.  Even if you weren’t responsible for the things that happened, you are directly responsible and in control of what happens next.  We always have a choice, at any given moment, to continue doing the same things we have always done, or to change our ways and change the outcome.

I love this quote by Eric Roth: “For what it’s worth … it’s never too late, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

May 2020 be the year you take ownership.  Be bold. Set goals. Be the change you want to see.
